About Belper in Derbyshire

Belper is a town in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England, about 9 miles north of Derby on the River Derwent. The population in 2011 was 21,824.

Belper's history dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period when it was known as Beaurepaire – meaning "beautiful retreat" – because of its position on the edge of the Peak District.

The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Belperre", and by 1254 had become a market town. It grew rapidly in the early 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, becoming one of the first industrialised towns in Derbyshire.

The town is best known for its heritage as a centre for the cotton and hosiery industries, and for its Victorian architecture. It also has a strong musical tradition, and is home to the Belper Town Band – one of the oldest brass bands in the country.

Today, Belper is a thriving market town with a wide range of shops, businesses and amenities, as well as a number of primary and secondary schools. It is also home to two universities – the University of Derby and Belper School of Art.
